Herbs for Summer Skin Care: What to Use After the Sun

I lived in Florida for 42 years before moving to North Carolina last summer. I have never known a gentle summer. And for a long time my after-sun routine was the same aloe gel in a green bottle that everyone has, the kind that turns sticky after a few minutes and does not seem to actually do much beyond the initial cool feeling.
When I started studying herbs more seriously I learned that a few plants have documented effects that go well beyond surface cooling. They work on the actual mechanisms of UV damage, reducing inflammation at the cellular level, supporting the repair of the skin barrier, scavenging free radicals, and stimulating the collagen production that sun exposure depletes.
This post covers five herbs for summer skin care, the research behind each one, and two complete recipes you can make at home.
Five Herbs for Summer Skin
ALOE VERA
Already covered in depth in the aloe vera herb profile here on The Herbal Homestead.
For skin specifically: aloe reduces inflammation via multiple pathways, stimulates fibroblast activity for collagen repair, and provides mucilaginous cooling relief that makes it irreplaceable for acute sunburn. Apply fresh gel from the plant or pure store-bought gel to clean skin multiple times daily.

CALENDULA (Calendula officinalis)
Calendula is the herb I wish more people knew about for skin repair. It contains flavonoids and triterpenoids that reduce inflammatory cytokines, promote epithelial cell proliferation, and stimulate tissue repair at a cellular level. The research shows benefits for dermatitis, surgical wounds, and radiation-induced skin damage. For after-sun use it actively heals rather than just cools.

LAVENDER (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender essential oil has documented analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that make it genuinely useful for burn care. A few drops diluted in aloe vera gel and applied to sunburned skin reduce both pain and inflammation. Lavender also supports skin regeneration.

CHAMOMILE (Matricaria chamomilla)
Chamomile's compound chamazulene has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that make it particularly effective for reducing the redness and irritation of sunburned or UV-stressed skin. A strong chamomile tea used as a compress or spray is one of the most accessible and effective after-sun treatments I know.

GREEN TEA (Camellia sinensis)
Green tea is rich in EGCG, one of the most potent topical antioxidants available. Applied to sun-exposed skin it reduces UV-induced oxidative stress, decreases inflammatory markers, and supports DNA repair mechanisms. Most people drink it rather than applying it to their skin, which means they are missing one of its best applications.

What You Will Need For All Four Recipes
Gather these before you start. Everything links directly below.
Recipe 1: DIY After-Sun Herbal Spray
This is the recipe I make at the start of every summer and keep in the refrigerator. It addresses multiple aspects of UV damage at once and costs almost nothing compared to equivalent commercial products.
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup cooled strong chamomile tea (3 tablespoons, steep covered 15 minutes)
1/2 cup pure aloe vera gel
1/4 cup cooled green tea (brewed cool, not hot, to preserve EGCG)
10 drops lavender essential oil
5 drops German chamomile essential oil
Combine in a glass spray bottle. Shake well before each use. Store in the refrigerator and use within 5 days. Spray liberally on sun-exposed or sunburned skin throughout the day. The aloe cools and supports collagen repair, chamomile reduces inflammation and redness, green tea neutralizes UV-induced free radicals, and lavender provides analgesic and anti-inflammatory support.
Recipe 2: DIY Overnight Skin Repair Facial Oil
Use the spray during the day and this overnight for deeper repair while you sleep.
INGREDIENTS:
2 tablespoons jojoba oil
1 tablespoon calendula-infused oil
5 drops lavender essential oil
3 drops German chamomile essential oil
3 drops vitamin E oil
Combine in a small dark glass dropper bottle. Apply 4 to 6 drops to clean slightly damp skin before bed. Massage gently in upward circular motions. Use throughout summer, not just after acute sun exposure.
Wish Garden's St. John's Wort Soothe and Recover oil is also worth having for deeper skin inflammation. It is one of my go-to topical preparations for skin that needs more intensive support.
